The weather had turned cold, well cold for Savannah in December, and since I play a game where I see how long I can go before I turn the heating on, I curled up in my bed to talk to Dom.

I held the phone away from my ear as he continued on his current theme of mind your own business; it was really getting on my nerves.

“But Dom, you were the one that said the police, your friends may I remind you, think Tina and I are responsible for Harriet’s murder.”

He sighed. “Ivy, if I’d been interviewing you two, I would have thought you were guilty of something, maybe not murder, but- what is that noise?”

I frowned. “Huh? What’s it sound lik- “I laughed. “You mean that rumbling noise?”

“Yeah, something wrong with the phone?”

“Nah, Sergeant Pepper is sleeping on my chest.” I stroked my little ball of fluff but snatched my hand back as his tail started a slow thump; grumpy, bite the hand that feeds you ball of fluff.

“Taking your life into your hands, letting him- “

“He’s not that bad …” Dom snorted, and I laughed. “Okay, he is that bad, but I’ve been working a lot and he gets lonely so …”

“Buy him a new toy.”

“Yes, that’s what I should do- “

“Ivy, back to this murder business, I think- “

“Maybe some catnip toys for Christmas, though he seems to prefer- “

“Ivy!”

I blinked; the love of my life’s tone was just a bit harsh. “What’s the matter with you?”

A huff of air caused static through the phone speaker and told me he’d reached a new level of frustration.

“What’s the matter? Come on, Ivy. Have you forgotten what happened the last time you didn’t listen to my- “

“No Dom, I will never forget almost getting you killed.” We were both silent, no doubt he was also remembering that my refusal to believe his theories on the identity of a murdering thief had gotten him beaten half to death and grazed by a bullet. “Look, this is different. Can I at least tell you what Tina and I learned today?”

“All right, Ivy. What neighborhood gossip did you uncover?”

I drew a deep breath through my nose in an attempt to keep from saying something that would start a fight; condescending men really pushed my buttons.

Pushing aside my irritation, I told him the little we had learned. “So, the most interesting thing, as far as Tina and I can see, is that Mason Girard was seen going into Harriet’s at closing time and he was carrying one of his boxes of chocolates- “

“You don’t know that it actually contained chocolates, just that it was one of the boxes he sells them in.”

My eyes widened. “Oooh, you’re right!” I scooted up in bed, dislodging the cat. He glared at me and flounced from the room. “What if the box actually held the finial-no, no it had chocolates in it.”

“You can’t know that for fact …”

My excitement dimmed as I recalled running into the bird girl statue.
